A visit from Paddy Madden – the school gardener

Both staff and children were looking forward to welcoming Mr. Paddy Madden, the school gardener, on Friday 11th October and they were not disappointed. Each class was treated to a nature workshop centred around the theme of Autumn. Mr. Madden brought many interesting things for the children to see and touch, including samples of autumn fruits, nuts, berries, leaves and bulbs such as hyacinth and white daffodil. He also had hibernation boxes that he had made for bees and ladybirds. He spoke to the children about hibernation, migration and the various different forms of seed dispersal. He also suggested one good way of tackling climate change – plant a tree! He even donned a Wexford jersey as his visit coincided with Goal Jersey Day. Well done Paddy!!!

School Closed tomorrow Wed 16th Oct.

sorry we closed

Date for your diaries – School Closure announced 16th Oct. 2019

As part of the ongoing continuing professional development of teachers and the roll out of the new Primary Language Curriculum, the staff of Piercestown N.S have been invited to attend their whole school training in Wexford Education Centre on Wed 16th Oct. 2019. This results in the school being closed on this day. As stated on our school calendar issued last year, we have one other exceptional day school closure and we have yet to receive this date.

St. Martins Abú!!!

Staff and students donned the St. Martins colours to welcome our three in a row camogie champions to Piercestown N.S. today. The children listened enthusiastically to words of wisdom from team captain Marie-Claire Morrissey and goal keeper Mags Darcy. The biggest cheer of all was reserved for Lauren Carty as she announced no homework that night to celebrate their victory. We wish the girls the best of luck on their journey and we’ll be with them every step of the way. Here’s hoping for their return in March as All Ireland Club Champions.

Skippy John!

In keeping with our Active School motto – “Walk, run, jump or skip, Come on Piercestown, Let’s get fit!’ – one of the first activities for the new school year took place on 19th September, with the return of ‘Skippy John’. The children were delighted to welcome him back for another fun-filled day of skipping for everyone. There was simple skipping, partner skipping, group skipping and even ‘pretzel skipping’. Each class had their own session of skipping and the day ended with a whole school demonstration. Check out these videos for a flavour of the fun that was had!

Rugby Fever

Rugby fever arrived in Piercestown National School on Thursday October 3rd, as Ireland took on Russia in the group games. It was almost perfect timing with kick off taking place at 11.15am. This meant the children had enough time to get out for break and gather when the bell rang to sing Ireland’s Call, before returning to their classrooms. Their teachers reassure us the learning was cross curricular from maths, to music, to recount writing and much more. The result went Ireland’s way  after the upset of Saturday. Check out Ms. Rea and her Senior Infants preparing for the big game in the attached video.

Monday 23rd Sept. International Sign Language Day

international day of sign languages

Piercestown National School would like to acnkowledge and celebrate ‘International Sign Language Day’ tomorrow, Monday 23rd September. Over the past 5 year, Piercestown N.S. has began to introduce elements of the sign languauge known as ‘Lámh’ into its every day activity.  This year, sees an increased effort at this with all classes being taught ‘signs of the week’ each week and actively being encouraged to use these signs.

We have a dedicated ‘lámh’ noticeboard just as you enter the school building on the way to the P.E. hall. This week are two new signs are ‘Quick’ and ‘thank you’.

Given the day that is in it, why not stop and pick a sign to use tomorrow when you call to our school to either drop or collect your child.

We would love to see our initiative spread into our wider school community.
