Second Class

School’s out for Summer!!!

Well done to Rang a Dó for all their hard work this year. Now it’s time to take a break and have a great summer holiday!

2nd Class School Tour – Ahoy Me Mateys!

Rang a dó had an absolute ball on their school tour today in Pirates Cove. The torrential rain in the morning did nothing to dampen our spirits as we set off. Luckily for us it cleared up in the afternoon, just in time for our go on the bumper boats. Take a look at the video to see what we got up to!

Active Week – Prize Winners

Congratulations to our class winners of the Hula hoop a thon, Skip a thon, Keepy Uppies, Limbo, Balance Beam and Welly throw. Some of them even went on to become overall winners in the school! Pictured below also is the staff against children in the Balance Beam competition. The four children long outlasted all of the staff, despite Mr. Murphy’s valiant effort! Today’s prize giving ceremony marks the end of another fab Active Week!

Chess returns!

Chess is back! 2nd class had their first chess lesson at the end of last week. Some of the children already knew how to play and were very happy to show their classmates the basics. This week some of our most experienced players, 6th class children, joined us in 2nd to teach the children more about chess. Have a look and see how they got on!

Food Dudes – More certificates earned!

Here are some photos of the latest children to earn certificates for eating healthy ‘torthaí agus glasraí’ in school every day. Our first platinum certs were given out this week. Well done everyone. Not long left now. Please keep up the good work!

Well done boys and girls!

First Communion

There were many early risers in Piercestown on the morning of Saturday 14th May as the children in 2nd class were full of excitement about making their First Holy Communion. Together with Mrs. Corrigan and Lena, these First Communicants had worked so hard all year to prepare for this special sacrament, learning about what it means to be a follower of Christ, saying their prayers daily and practicing their readings and hymns before the event. On the day they made everyone proud as they processed up the church and took their places on the altar, singing sweetly for all. It was a joyful occasion and everyone there was delighted to see Fr. O’Reilly and Fr. Lorenzo return to join with Fr. Aodhán in celebrating the mass. Once again, choir was provided by Ms. Sinnott and children from 4th, 5th and 6th classes who generously gave up their time to enhance the ceremony with their beautiful singing. Congratulations to all the children who made their First Holy Communion, may God bless them and keep them safe always.

Easter in 2nd class

With First Communion just around the corner for the children in 2nd class, the focus in Religion in the run up to Easter was on Holy Thursday and the Last Supper. The children were helped to see the connection between Jesus sharing bread with his apostles that night, saying “Do This In Memory Of Me” and the priest giving Communion to people at Mass. Even though the children were learning about the true meaning of Easter for Christians, there was still plenty of time left for all the fun and frolics that the occasion brings, with activities such as egg hunts and making Easter cards. Check out this video which shows highlights of the Easter Raffle and our 2nd class egg hunt, which provided much Friday fun before we broke for the holidays.

World Down Syndrome Day / World Epilepsy Day / World Autism Day

March and April were busy months in our school in terms of inclusion and awareness, and the children in 2nd class were very enthusiastic. First they proudly wore their odd socks to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. Next they donned their purple to raise awareness for Epilepsy and finally, they decked themselves out in blue to celebrate World Autism Day. The children were keen to learn more and asked some really interesting questions about Down Syndrome, Epilepsy and Autism, sometimes showing insight and understanding way beyond their years. Maith thú Rang a Dó!

Our Cancelled Communion Day

Saturday, 15th May,

Was meant to be our Communion Day.

So we remembered to take the time to pray,

Time to celebrate and time to play.

December 2020

What an extremely busy month we had! We participated in the ‘12 Days of Fitmas’, a Santa Dash, rehearsed and performed for our Virtual Christmas Carol Service and continued our fabulous learning in all other subjects.  We were all exhausted by the end of the month and thoroughly enjoyed our Movie Day at the end of term.

Check out a snippet of what December had to offer.

November 2020

Time sure flies when you’re having fun! November has been jam packed with learning and 2nd Class enjoyed every minute.  Take a look at some of the fantastic learning we achieved this month.  Bain taitneamh as!

First Communion – Do This In Memory

Toy Sunday – 29th November 2020

The children in 2nd class have officially begun doing the Do This In Memory programme in preparation for making their First Confession and First Holy Communion this year. This is a parish-based programme designed to facilitate parents, families and the parishes’ active involvement in the preparation for these sacraments. Parents and their children are invited to attend Mass on specific dates as part of their preparation. The first date in the calendar of events was Toy Sunday, 29th November, where the children were asked to bring in a toy to donate to children in need this Christmas. In lieu of attending Mass, which was not possible due to Covid 19 restrictions, Fr. O’Reilly blessed the toys in the classroom with Mrs. Larkin and the children last Friday. Many thanks to the parents and children of 2nd class who donated so generously.

Science Week 2020

Science Week is an annual national celebration of the life-changing and fascinating world of science. The week-long festival highlights how science, technology and engineering are fundamental to everyday life.

Science Week in 2nd Class was a BLAST this year! Each day the students participated in a science activity of exploration and discovery. From growing our own cress seeds and eating the end product to flying Roto-copters of varying sizes, the students participated whole-heartedly in each activity.  Chemical reactions and liquid density was the highlight of the week with our lava lamp investigation.  The students shared thoughts and questions and even tried out the experiments with their adults at home.

Our Science Week Schedule

Monday – Roto-copters Students practiced using a scientific procedure to determine how variables affect the fall speed of a paper helicopter.

Tuesday – Reaction Timer This test uses the known properties of gravity to determine how long it takes a person to respond to the dropping of an object by measuring how far the object can fall before being caught.

Wednesday – Snake Spiral Warm air is lighter than cold air. Warm air therefore rises and cold air comes in to take its place. This causes air currents – both indoor and outdoor. These are called convection currents. The air above the radiator is warm and rises and makes the snake spin.

Thursday – Lava Lamps Testing Chemical reactions and liquid density.

Friday – Food Science Growing Cress – Conditions for Growth and enjoying our tasty cress sandwiches!

Maths Week 2020

Maths Week was a great success again this year, despite having to think outside the box to ensure the safety of all concerned. The usual activities such as Problem of the Day and Maths Olympiad were held, not to mention the latest addition to the programme – the Daily Maths Riddle announced by Ms. Walsh over the intercom each day. Of course, one of the highlights of the week is always the Tables Bee competition and this year was no exception! The finalists from each class went on to battle it out in an exciting final that was held outdoors and socially distanced. Check out the video for a flavour of the learning that took place in 2nd class and the fun that was had along the way!!!

A New School Year!

The boys and girls in 2nd class 2020/2021 were not put off by the rain as they returned to school on Thursday 27th August, after being away for over five months. They were full of the excitement of seeing their friends again and ready to embrace all of the new safety procedures put in place to protect everyone from COVID-19. During the day they had a visit from Fr. O’Reilly to welcome them back and to remind them about the special sacraments that take place in 2nd class – First Confession and First Holy Communion. Here are some photos of the children on their first day back!

Halley’s Comet!

As part of the topic of Earth in Space, Isaac decided to do a project on Comets. At the 2nd class Zoom meeting this week he shared lots of facts about one of the most famous comets, Halley’s Comet, with the class. Like most comets, Halley’s Comet is made of ice, dust and gas. It can be seen from Earth every 75 years. It last appeared in 1986 and will come again in 2061. Well done Isaac!

Hello Mr. Scarecrow!

Poetry – Junk Art

To continue their work on poetry this week the children in second class were given a poem entitled ‘Junk Art’ as inspiration for writing their own poems and for making junk art! Have a look and see what Leah, Kelly, Séamus, Joseph, Ava and Lucia came up with…

Junk Art by Lil Pluta

I feel so smart when I make art, from things I’d throw away.

Look there! I’ve made three floating fish, out of an old foam tray.

A coffee can becomes a drum, dressed up with string and yarn.

I find the box that held my juice. Now it’s a bright red barn!

My paper scraps are in a bin, I know I’ll find a use.

I fold and cut and paint and glue. I’ve made a silly moose!

I feel so smart when I make art from things I’d throw away.

I like to save odd bits of stuff to use another day.

Life Skills

Since school closed the boys and girls in second class have been so busy. Not only have they been doing their school work, they’ve also been learning valuable life skills such as baking, sewing, gardening, cleaning, minding their little brothers and sisters and looking after their pets, to name but a few. See what Lucy, Lucia, Jessica, Leah and Myah have been doing!

Art and Music!

The children have begun learning about planet Earth in Space and The Solar System. To finish off our blogging for this week we have some photos of their artwork and also a tin whistle video clip – well done Séamus, Isaac, Leah, Kelly, Lucy, Lucia and Seán.

More poetry!

Rang a dó are still working on their poetry. Here are some Nursery Rhymes with a difference…!!!

Creativity!

From making musical instruments to painting, from mindful glitter jars and colouring to updating nursery rhymes, the children in 2nd class have been letting their creativity flow! What a talented bunch they are…. have a look!

Poetry!

Before school closed the children had been learning about poetry with Mrs. Corrigan and Miss Cooney. They have continued some of this work in recent weeks as part of their learning at home. Here is a selection of their poems for you to enjoy!

The Learning Continues…

It was another week of fun and learning for 2nd class pupils (and their parents!) last week. As well as the usual activities such as reading, problem solving, writing, etc. the learning took on a more active nature as the whole school community embraced ACTIVE HOME WEEK 2020. The children were encouraged to spend 60 mins each day being active. This took on so many forms – from slow bicycle race to hurling with toilet rolls to yoga and lots more! The children entered entered into the spirit of the event and great fun was had by all. Bualadh bos go léir!
