Junior Infant Prayer Service

The Junior Infant prayer service, led by Fr O’Reilly, took place on Wednesday 14th November. Parents were invited in to share the celebration which was organised by Ms. Gráinne Taylor, class teacher with help from Lena Foley, SNA. The children had practised their songs and prayers and did themselves proud on the day.

Second Class Field Trip

Second class had a fantastic field trip last week to the Wexford Wildfowl Reserve. We learned all about our native birds and the excellent work the reserve is doing, as well as some interesting facts about birds of prey further afield. We got to climb the lookout tower and spot some of the birds with the telescope and binoculars. We then had some fun activities and our packed lunch. Before returning to school we made a pit stop at O’Hanrahan station in town where we studied the architecture and uses of the building. This consolidated some of our learning from our History lessons on the evolution of rail transport and the history of Wexford town. We also did a fun questionnaire and some maths timetable work! Later that week we made our own architectural impressions of the railway station.

Science Week 2018 in Junior Infants

Junior Infants had lots of fun during Science Week last week. Among our favourite activities were the ‘float or sink’ and ‘magnets’ experiments.

During our float or sink experiment we even learned why an orange with the peel on will float, while an orange with the peel off will sink!! We were also lucky to have some boys and girls from 2nd class join us for this experiment on the day!

We also learned a lot about magnets and various types of materials. We went on a magnetic hunt around our classroom to investigate which materials were magnetic and which materials were not.

Take a look at some of our pictures below. It was great fun!

Freaky Friday!!!

There was none of the usual staff or pupils in Piercestown N.S. on 26th October. Instead of staff we had teletubbies, bananas, unicorns, witches, a pirate and even Little Red Riding Hood showed up! For pupils we had witches, vampires, werewolves, superheroes, old ladies, dead cheerleaders, dead brides, dead soccer players and much more! Zeus the King of the Gods came and there were lots of animals too – dragons, unicorns, cats and even a pig! Barbie and Mr. Tomato Head both made an appearance along with a few celebrities like Michael Jackson and Mr. Bean. Everyone gathered at the St. Martin’s Centre on that cold morning before school. We screamed out our Active School Motto – ‘Walk, Run, Jump and Skip. Come on Piercestown Let’s Get Fit!’ and then paraded down to the school in all our glory! Great fun!!!

Green School – “Battle of the Batteries!”

The “Battle of the Batteries” competition is well and truly underway in Piercestown N.S. as part of our journey towards our next Green Schools Flag.

Each class from junior infants to 6th class are in the race to collect and recycle the most batteries on a half-term basis. The class who collect and recycle the most batteries each month will win a homework pass for the following month.

The Green Schools Committee will be busy collecting and counting the batteries from each class and will announce the winners at the end of each half-term.

A big WELL DONE to Ms. Hearne’s 3rd class who collected a whopping 611 batteries during the first half-term and swooped the first homework pass prize of the year. Also, a huge congratulations to Ms. Newport’s 1st class who were very close, in 2nd place with 600 batteries, and also scooped a homework pass for November.

Well done to everyone who participated in our very first “Battle of the Batteries” in Piercestown N.S. and good luck to everyone for the coming half-term competition. Happy recycling!!

A “Battle of the Batteries” poster competition is also up and running – the children from 2nd to 6th have been invited to design and decorate their own poster and slogan to raise awareness in recycling batteries at home and in school.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Green Schools noticeboard for the winner at the end of the week!

Planting Bulbs!

There’s a nip in the air, the leaves are turning golden and it’s that time of year for planting bulbs. Every year each child in the school plants a daffodil bulb. This year our day of planting took place on Wednesday 24th October and we were delighted to have Hugh and Mary Barrett back to help us out on the day. Our 6th class pupils are once again taking part in ‘The Crocus Project’. They planted yellow crocuses in the shape of the Star of David to remember all the children who died in the Holocaust. In spring our daffodils and crocuses will brighten our days after the cold, dark winter months!
