Active Week 2015 kicks off!

ready steadygo

Active Week 2015 got off to a great start today with the children and teachers involved in lots of activity over the course of the day.

St. Martin’s Club were represented by Liz Cullen who devoted her morning to upskilling Junior infants to 1st class in basic hurling skills. The children were absolutely delighted with this session which officially kicked off Active Week. Liz take a bow – we are hugely grateful!

Lunchtime saw the first whole school and community activity take place with the ‘Walk a mile with a smile’. With Ms. Walsh on the microphone 6th class lead the way around the pitch. Each class from 1st to 6th had to complete 6 laps of the pitch to clock up the ‘mile’ stretch. To motivate them some energetic music blasted out over the speakers. Junior and Senior infants joined in for the last 3 laps and the Active Committee took on their role with great pride here helping the infants make their way around. The senior end of the school were might motivators for the infants as they clapped and cheered them through their last lap. Many thanks also to the parents who joined us on the day. The mile was achieved and it was smiles all round with some teachers and children  even breaking into a run as they came to the finish. Well done to all involved.

Finally the highlight of the day was the random bell ring that reminded all of the classes to stop what they were doing and Drop Everything and Dance. Ms. Walsh even managed to catch a few of the classes on video!! The Macarena was the song of the day as everybody got their groove on!

The children all headed home this evening with some PE homework to do!

Tomorrow, Day 2 of Active Week, will see more GAA coaching for 2nd – 6th clasS, the bell will ring for some Drop Everything and Run time, and the Active committee will be putting the junior infants through their paces at the Try it Tuesday session. Best of luck to the boys B team tomorrow who travel to Gorey to take on CBS Gorey team!

Let’s hope the sun shines on Active Week for the rest of the week.

Countdown to First ever Active Week at Piercestown N.S.

active school week 2015

The countdown is on to the first ever Active Week at Piercestown N.S. as we journey towards becoming a recognised Active school in the future.

A timetable of events went home with all children today and we hope that some family and friends can join us for some of the activities along the way.

We would like you to join us on some of the following:

We would like you to join us on the following:

  • Monday: Walk a Mile with a Smile at 12.30pm – this involves the whole school walking the equivalent laps of the field in school to measure 1 mile. This event will be held at lunchtime and it would be fantastic if some of you the parents could join us.
  • On Wednesday, similar to what was completed to earn us a Green Flag, Mrs, Barrett will be co-ordinating a Walk on Wednesday. Here we aim to meet at the pitch between 9-9.15am and walk to school together.
  • Friday: the children have opted for a Rounders match – parents versus 6th class at 1pm. Please contact Liz Cullen 086-3373555 if you are interested in being part of the parent team!
  • This will be followed by our Medal Presentation at 2pm to all of the boys who were on the victorious Rackard league football team bringing the cup home after 16 years.
  • Healthy Lunches – to tie in with healthy living and being active the Active Committee have decided that all children should put a special effort into eating only healthy lunches for the duration of Active Week and drinks should be limited to water and milk.
  • Ms. Walsh has co-ordinated with the Maldron Hotel to ensure that all Piercestown children who attend the Maldron Hotel during Active Week are entitled to a free swimming pass.
  • In order for Active Week to be a success, we need you the parents and community behind us. Remember a ‘Healthy Body is a Healthy Mind’ .      So join us on our journey towards being an Active School and remember ‘Walk, run, jump or skip, Come on Piercestown Let’s Get Fit’.

Congratulations to our own Spelling Bee – runner up

Having been crowned the first ever spelling bee at Piercestown N.S., Elizabeth accompanied by Mrs. Caldicott and two classmates traveled to Gorey for the County Final. This saw over 30 schools from Wexford take part in what could only be described as a tense and exciting day.

Not only did Elizabeth represent herself and her school with great pride, she emerged as runner up being in the final to be pipped at the post.

Congratulations to Elizabeth – a major achievement for any student!

Chess Tournament 2015

chess

The annual chess tournament in school that takes place in Piercestown N.S. has kicked off. This sees all children from 3rd to 6th class compete through several rounds of chess before one champion emerges as the overall winner and receives the chess cup that is handed down from year to year.

The competition will also see class winners awarded for their successes.

3rd class began the tournament today with the first round. Many thanks to Mrs. Cooney for opening the first round of the tournament. Over the coming days, 4th, 5th and 6th class will follow in their footsteps. The tournament will run on a points system and see winners from the various classes play each other.  Best of luck to all involved.

The question is ‘Who will take the trophy home for 2015?!’ Watch this space!

Accepted items are as follows: new and used women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, shoes, belts, handbags, ties, linens, household textiles, stuffed toys.

Mobile phones are also accepted in a separate bag.

Pillows and duvets cannot be accepted.

The date of our collection is May 25th so you have a few weeks to get that Spring/Summer clean out in order.

People can drop the bags to the Scout Hall (across the road from the school) before 9.30am on the morning of the 25th of May OR at the Scout Hall up on the veranda on Sunday 24th between 10am and 1pm.
