Get your purple and gold on for Monday!

September 29th saw the Wexford Ladies Junior Football team head to Croke Park to participate in the TG4 All Ireland final versus New York.

With a stunning performance, the ladies brought the West County Hotel Cup home with a final score of 1-12 to 1- 10. Monday night of the homecoming saw the quays of Wexford thronged to celebrate the win and honour the ladies.

To continue this celebration, the cup will be brought to Piercestown N.S. on Monday Oct 20th shortly after 1pm.

To honour our heroes, we would ask all children to try and wear some purple and gold on Monday! All spectators are welcome to join us. So let’s deck ourselves out in the purple and gold and enjoy this special guest visit!!

Piercestown Boys and Girls march on to the Semi Finals in Rackard League

On a wild blustery afternoon, Friday 17th October the boys and girls both put on impressive displays.

The boys match took place at 2.30pm versus Taghmon in Killurin. In wild conditions both teams put in a Trojan effort with a Man of the Match performance from David Cantwell scoring a grand total of 4-1. Piercestown put on their finest display to date in the Rackard league to march on to the semi finals. The final score was 5-6 to 3-6. The semi final sees us face Gorey CBS – date and venue to be confirmed. In the words of Barack Obama ‘Is Féidir Linn!’Boys semi final will take place in Blackwater this Thursday Oct 23rd versus Gorey at 3.45pm

Hot on the heels of the boys match, the girls team took to the pitch in Killurin. The girls quarter final was against Bree. Again, Trojan efforts were made in wild conditions. There were impressive performances from all over the field and their efforts were rewarded with a victory, the reward being a place in the semi finals. The final score was 5-4 to 1-2. The girls face Horeswood next with time and venue to be confirmed. Semi finals here we come!!! Girls semi final versus Horeswood will take place this Thursday Oct 23rd in Grantstown at 3.45pm

Quarter Finals beckon for both girls and boys in Rackard League Football

Both the boys and girls teams travel to Killurin this Friday for quarter finals matches of the Rackard League football tournament.

Boys will play Taghmon at 2.30pm and the girls will play Bree at 3.30pm.

Maths week 2014 will kick off tomorrow morning at Piercestown N.S.

Launch of ‘Learning in Depth’

Following the success and enjoyment of the ‘Learning in Depth’ project taken on by 5th and 6th class in 2013 2014, this great initiative will once again be launched this coming Thursday at 2.15pm in the P.E. hall.

The project will be taken on by both 5th and 6th class where they will be offered many choices of topics for the coming school year 2014 2015. Inspired by the educationalist Kieran Egan, the ‘Learning in Depth’ course has been taken on in schools all over the world.

Advocates of this approach argue that it teaches research and inquiry skills, helps students discover the power of sticking with something for a longer period of time, that it build confidence, that it helps students cultivate creativity and imagination, and that students learn any number of other skills along the way to becoming experts about their topic.

Class of the Month

A new initiative has been taken on with great gusto at Piercestown N.S. The competition called ‘Class of the Month’ was introduced to all of the children in an assembly on Monday 29th September. It runs throughout the entire school day from 9.20am to 3pm each day including class time, break times, lunchtimes, informal times on the corridors etc. The initiative is focused on respect, health and safety, good manners and overall good behaviour.

A dedicated noticeboard has been established where the children can remind themselves of the 5 things they need to do to score some points for their class. Ms. Walsh, after checking in with the class teachers at the end of each week, updates the leader board on the Monday of each week so the children can keep an eye on their progress. The noticeboard also hosts a selection of inspirational quotes from world famous people such as Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama to name but a few. The winning class will be rewarded with a homework pass, certificates and some well earned treats. Watch this space to see what class will go down in history to be the first ‘Class of the Month’ at Piercestown N.S. The winner will be announced on Friday 24th October just as the children finish up for their mid term break.

Thurs.9.20-9.45am and 3.00-4.00pm and late night 6.30pm-7.30pm

Name that Newsletter !!

It has been decided to publish a short monthly newsletter to ensure that all families are informed of some of the initiatives and upcoming events that will take place in Piercestown N.S. The information will also be available on the blog on the website.

In preparation for the launch of our newsletter it has been decided to run a poll to choose the name. The result will inform the name of the school newsletter.

The poll will be open this Friday October 3rd until Friday week the 10th of October. To have your say don’t forget to cast your vote.

The poll is tied at 50:50 between the Piercestown Post and the Piercestown Press….they are just hours left for the name of the School Newsletter to be decided so get voting!

The name will be announced by Monday.
