Seachtain na Gaeilge 2021 – Comórtas Selfie

This year sees the return in Piercestown N.S. of us embracing the use of technology with our Seachtain na Gaeilge in the form of our competition / comórtas ‘Comórtas Selfie’ – this is where we ask the children to work with their family in finding some ‘Gaeilge’ in the environment and take a selfie with it. We then ask for the photo to be emailed to bmurphy@piercestownns.com . On Tuesday the 16th, the best two will be chosen for a small ‘duais’ (prize). So let’s get our thinking caps on, where do we see Gaeilge in our local community?! Sometimes, we don’t see things until we actually go looking for them. Lean ar aghaidh agus bain triail as!

Piercestown Goes Hollywood for Seachtain Na Gaeilge 2021!!

Dia daoibh go léir!

This week to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge we are going to go virtual in a fun and new competition for all to try. Below are 15 famous movie lines/scenes translated from English to Irish. This week using technology I want you to try and re-create these famous scenes using your cúpla focail. There will be prizes for Best Male Actor, Best Female Actor, Best Costume and Most Creative upon on return to school. All scenes are very short as to make it easier to take part in and send. You can pick a different scene from any movie or even have a scene where you use both Irish and English. Best of luck and get creating!! All entries to be sent to bmurphy@piercestownns.com

Fr. O’Reilly’s Retirement

On the morning of Thursday 11th February, Fr. O’Reilly celebrated his final mass in Piercestown. He was joined by Fr. Aodhán Marken and handed over the key to the church during the ceremony. Many parishioners and members of school staff joined in the celebration remotely. The following day was his official retirement day. Ms. Walsh arrived at his doorstep and presented him with a book full of good wishes from the whole school community. It was a lovely way of marking the day, especially in the absence of a ‘big send off’ which unfortunately is not possible at this time. Fr. O’Reilly was truly touched by the gesture and commented on how, for the first time ever, he would have plenty of time to read the book! Once again, on behalf of our whole school community we would like to thank Fr. O’Reilly for his many years of dedicated service and wish him the very best of luck in his retirement.

PT Young Scientist Week 2: Engineers Week

Hello everybody,

This week for our PT Young Scientist we are going to be putting on our engineers hats and designing and planning various STEM activities this week. An engineer is a person who designs and builds complex products, machines, systems, or structures. Engineers want to know how and why things work. They have scientific training that they use to make practical things to make things better, safer or more efficient. This week I am challenging you to get involved and to become an engineer too. Just like last week you can pick any of the activities from above and you can watch the helpful videos below for ideas, explanations and links to help with the activities. Best of luck Junior Scientists!

PT Young Scientist

Hello everybody,

Thank you to all who took part this week in our PT Young Scientist. I was amazed and delighted with the amount of pupils who got their scientific hats on and took to solving the various questions I set out for the week. As well as that other classes through their amazing teachers completed more STEM activities rather in class, over zoom or through projects. Pupils planned and created hot wheel highways, nests that any bird would be proud of, houses that the three little pigs or a mini-beast would love to own, amazing science with skittles and many, many more. A huge well done to all this week and have a look at our amazing scientist hall of fame below and some amazing videos too showing off their experiments. Keep an eye on the blog next week for some more amazing STEM challenges for engineering’s week and also some using technology.
