County Champions!

Piercestown N.S. was a sea of maroon and white to welcome the Camogie County Champions on Monday 8th October after their heroic victory over Oulart The Ballagh. The children were treated to some words of wisdom from team captain, Katie O’Connor, player of the match, Ciara O’Connor and club stalwarts Lauren Carthy and Noleen Lambert. The greatest cheer of all was reserved for Maura O’Connor who announced that there would be no homework for anyone that day. A huge well done to the girls!

Maths Week 2018

Maths Week took place from 15th to 19th October and what an exciting week it was! We had our Monster Maths Quiz on Monday to kick off the week, followed by other exciting events such as Tables Bee Champion and Countdown Competition. One of the children’s favourite activities by far was IZAK9, (click here for video demonstration) an engaging maths resource that challenges pupils to work together on problem solving activities. Other fun events held include ‘Guess how many jelly beans in the jar’ and ‘Guess the weight of the pumpkin!’ Our ‘Problem of the day’ was also very popular and the 5th and 6th class problems were quite a challenge for children and adults alike! The week finished on Friday with a prize giving ceremony during which our competition winners chose from prizes such as chess and draughts sets, dominoes and playing cards to encourage them to continue learning and having fun.

All of the above took place within the context of Mathsweek Ireland, a week-long  nationwide celebration of mathematics with in excess of 250,000 pupils, parents and teachers participating from all parts of the country as well as welcome visitors from abroad. Green School

A big welcome back to everyone – another busy year ahead! The Green Schools Committee will have their first meeting of the year at the end of September to recap on the work done last year and to plan ahead for the coming months. The pupils on the committee will partake in a series of surveys and questionnaires with the pupils from Junior Infants to 6th class. They will also raise awareness on current energy and water conservation in Piercestown N.S., and how we can help spread this awareness at home and in our local community. The committee will also lead us in raising awareness towards recycling and waste disposal in the school community.

We look forward to sharing our ideas, news and events here on our blog and on our newly revamped Green Schools notice board in school!!!

2nd Class School Tour

2nd class had a brilliant day out in Wells House on their school tour this year! They enjoyed a tour of the house, archery in the woods and saw some amazing birds of prey in the falconry. They had great fun in the playground and enjoyed their picnic lunch in the sunshine.

Picnic Benches!

Three picnic benches have been placed at the back of the school to provide seating for pupils who want to finish their sandwich, fruit, etc. outside. This move is in response to one of the suggestions returned in the parent poll on lunches carried out earlier this year and is part of our overall Health Promoting School initiative.
