Rackard League Football Final – here we come!

There was an air of anxiety around Piercestown N.S. and Murrintown N.S. as the boys prepared to play the replay of the semi final.

Conditions were much better than the last day, hours of training had been clocked up over mid term, jerseys were washed, dried and ready for wearing, all that was needed was a victory to get us to the final.

Piercestown got off to a great start with a super goal  by David Cantwell after just a few minutes. But Gorey are never a team to be beaten easily and they continued to play with the energy and effort that has seen them win so many times over the last few years. The half time whistle blew and Piercestown were leading 1-2 to 2 points.

But Gorey were not holding back. They scored the first point after half time to bring it back to within two points. Piercestown’s passion and hunger for this game drove them on to produce another two goals by David Cantwell and Killian Barry to put Piercestown in a nice position with a lead of 3-2 to 3 points. But Gorey haven’t been champions for the last few years to lie down at that point. They kicked on and soon were racking up the points, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. With just one point between the teams Piercestown had to invest every ounce of energy to hold on to what could only be described as an epic win!

So 2014 sees Piercestown march on to the Rackard League football final versus Horeswood. Time and venue to be confirmed.

A huge thank you to all parents who both transported and supported the boys today. It is great to get another day out!

Rackard League – updates from the Semi finals

The mid term was preceded by two breathtaking matches on Thursday 23rd October, the girls taking on Horeswood in Grantsown and the boys went to Blackwater to face their rivals Gorey CBS.

Both teams gave 200% on the day and at half time, the Piercestown girls and Horeswood girls could not be separated. Unfortunately, Horeswood upped the anti in the second half and proved just a little bit too strong for the girls. Ms. Hearne was hugely proud of the girls at the end of their participation in Rackard league and their heart and commitment was evident to the very end. Well done girls.

The boys were similarly caught in a tight game with Gorey CBS. After a slow start, Piercestown began to crawl their way back into contention. With 5 minutes of full time remaining, all spectators were on the edge of their seats as they watched Piercestown ‘never say die’ attitude reap the rewards with Joe Mernagh, 4th class, sticking a ball in the back of the net to level the game on the full time whistle. Extra time was played and at the end of 10 minutes each way with just a further point each, the teams could not be separated. And so, the training for both teams continues as we await the details of the replay of the semi final. At present, the replay is set for Tuesday 4th November 3.30pm in Patrick’s Park in Enniscorthy.

A Rackard league shield for the boys team will take place in Bellefield the same day, Tuesday 4th Nov beginning at 12.45pm. This shield will involve four schools; Gorey CBS, St. Aidan’s, Blackwater and Piercestown.

A Rackard League Shield for the girls will take place in St. Martins homeground on Wednesday Nov 5th at 1.15pm. This shield will involve four local schools; the Faythe, Mayglass/Lady;s Island, Piercestown and Kennedy Park.

A huge thank you to Ms. Hearne for her endless support in terms of Rackard League and her wisdom, talent and expert advice that she continues to share at Piercestown N.S.

Launch of ‘Learning in Depth’

Following the success and enjoyment of the ‘Learning in Depth’ project taken on by 5th and 6th class in 2013 2014, this great initiative will once again be launched this coming Thursday at 2.15pm in the P.E. hall.

The project will be taken on by both 5th and 6th class where they will be offered many choices of topics for the coming school year 2014 2015. Inspired by the educationalist Kieran Egan, the ‘Learning in Depth’ course has been taken on in schools all over the world.

Advocates of this approach argue that it teaches research and inquiry skills, helps students discover the power of sticking with something for a longer period of time, that it build confidence, that it helps students cultivate creativity and imagination, and that students learn any number of other skills along the way to becoming experts about their topic.

Feel free to come along and join us for the launch of this great learning experience.

Class of the Month

A new initiative has been taken on with great gusto at Piercestown N.S. The competition called ‘Class of the Month’ was introduced to all of the children in an assembly on Monday 29th September. It runs throughout the entire school day from 9.20am to 3pm each day including class time, break times, lunchtimes, informal times on the corridors etc. The initiative is focused on respect, health and safety, good manners and overall good behaviour.

A dedicated noticeboard has been established where the children can remind themselves of the 5 things they need to do to score some points for their class. Ms. Walsh, after checking in with the class teachers at the end of each week, updates the leader board on the Monday of each week so the children can keep an eye on their progress. The noticeboard also hosts a selection of inspirational quotes from world famous people such as Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama to name but a few. The winning class will be rewarded with a homework pass, certificates and some well earned treats. Watch this space to see what class will go down in history to be the first ‘Class of the Month’ at Piercestown N.S. The winner will be announced on Friday 24th October just as the children finish up for their mid term break.

Here is a flavour of some of the quotes that have bee motivating the children to date:

“I never had a policy. I have just tried to do my very best each and every day” – Abraham Lincoln

“Friends and good manners will carry you where money won’t go.” – Margaret Walker

“Good manners will open doors that education cannot!” – Clarence Thomas
