Green School update – Two parents needed for the Committee

Piercestown N.S. have got their ‘green’ back on and have started on the road towards achieving their 5th Green Flag! Flag 5 has the theme of ‘biodiversity’.

To get the ball rolling, October 2014, saw the children and staff complete a questionnaire on their understanding and awareness of biodiversity. Following this, the Green School committee is in the process of being elected. We are currently looking for two parent members to complete the Green School Committee.

Could any interested parents please contact the school to have themselves elected onto the committee. We will operate on a first come first served basis! Go on, get your green on!!!

Watch this space for the updated committee!

Rackard League Football Champions 2014!! The boys bring the cup home!

After an anxious start to the week, with the final being postponed, the boys of Murrintown and Piercestown N.S. took to the pitch at St. Patrick’s Park on Wednesday 12th November at 7.30pm. Their aim was to fight for a title that they had been dreaming of for the last 16 years. Over the last number of years, Piercestown came so close and yet have been on the receiving end of bitter disappointment, being beaten least year in extra time of the final.  Endless hours of training, matches and skills development have taken place this year, with the boys focusing on team work, discipline and above all desire to win.

The match kicked off at 7.30pm and Horeswood were off to a flying start. It took Piercestown a few minutes to settle but a goal by David Cantwell soon settled them down and it was game on! The points flew over and it was a very even match. When the half time whistle blew, Piercestown had edged into the lead by a single point. But Horeswood skill and determination was also to be admired. They opened up the second half with three points without reply to lead Piercestown by two points. It was here that the true character, determination and grit of the boys came to fruition with all boys in every position both on and off the pitch digging deep. There was true team spirit, comradely, hard work, commitment and  above all a burning desire to win and when the final whistle blew there was pure ecstasy from the Piercestown perspective with the final score reading 2-7 to 12 points in Piercestown favour. There were tears of joy for Piercestown and tears of anguish for a devastated Horeswood who deserved huge credit for their gallant performance. There is no doubt Wexford Rackard League hasn’t seen the last of Horeswood. But the night was Piercestown’s night, and as Diarmaid O Leary took to the stand to receive the trophy the crowd were vocal in their appreciation of the performance that sees the cup return to Piercestown for the first time since 1998!!!!!!! All agreed it was a moment to remember and a moment worth waiting for.

A huge thanks to all the parents, St. Martin’s GAA, staff in both Piercestown and Murrintown and all who have contributed in any way since this tournament kicked off in September. A special word of thanks to Mr. Johnny Murphy, Mr. Fintan White and Mr. Shane Howard in Murrintown who adopted Ms. Walsh into the Rackard League football scene with great ease.

A special mention to the Farmer’s Kitchen who put on a fantastic spread for the children on the night and to the local shop Londis for their contribution in the celebrations the day after.

Queens’ famous song ‘We are the Champions’ belted out of the speakers on Thursday 13th Nov as we honoured our heroes at a whole school assembly – where the Rackard League team delivered a very special message of NO HOMEWORK to the whole school. Fingers crossed for many more special days in years to come!

In the words of Michael Jordan ” Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen” – thank you to the team of 2014 who made it happen. We are so proud of you. Take a bow!!

Rackard League Football Final- time and venue confirmed

It gives me great pleasure to announce that the boys’ team have reached the Roinn A Rackard League football final.

The boys have shown great commitment, dedication and hard work over the last few months to succeed in reaching this stage.

The final will take place in St. Patrick’s Park in Enniscorthy on Monday November 10th.

There will be two matches played on the night:

  • Girls’ final between Castlebridge and Horeswood will take place at 6.15pm followed by
  • Boys’ final Piercestown versus Horeswood at 7.30pm.

We would ask that the players be at St. Patrick’s park no later than    7 p.m.

It would be great to have some support for the team on the night also.

Many thanks to all of the parents who have so generously given of their time over the last few months to drive the children to training and matches. Without your assistance, our attendance at these games would not be possible.

A huge congratulations to the boys on their achievement to date. Win, lose or draw there are already our heroes!

Mad about Maths moving into 2nd class

Maths activities will start tomorrow morning in 2nd class with Mrs. Newport, Mrs. Foran and some volunteer parents.

From activities such as cards, pentominoes, tangrams, numbers, connect four to name but a few there will be a wonderful buzz as the children work together  to compete and come up with many solutions to the problems and games.

The ‘Mad about Maths’ sessions will continue in 2nd  class until the week before Christmas.

Many thanks to the 2nd  class parents who volunteered  for tomorrow and for the next few weeks.

If you didn’t get a chance to volunteer and have a Wednesday morning from 9.30-10.30am free, don’t hesitate to join us!

Class of the Month for October….and the winner is ……2nd Class

Congratulations to second class who will go down in history as the first winner of ‘Class of the Month in Piercestown N.S.

This competition looks at enhancing all of the qualities that we as humans need to succeed in the world- manners, respect, safety, hard work and co-operation.

The classes were given credit for lining up when the bell rings, walking safely in single file in the corridors, showing respect to adults and each other, having respect for school property, working hard and co-operating. There weren’t many points between some of the classes at the end of October but in a fair contest the winner was announced at assembly on Monday and Mrs. Newport and second class were delighted with the news! Even the boys and girls in the other classes acknowledged the hard work that second class had put in. 2nd class will be rewarded with homework passes, a certificate from the Ms. Walsh and their very own pizza party this Friday!

Who will be the next ‘Class of the Month’ ?! November has kicked off and it’s anyone’s month! Watch this space!
