We welcome Ms Laura Walsh back as school principal with effect from 1st July.

Goodbye and thank you so much to Ms. Gráinne Taylor and Ms. Áine Whelan.  We wish them all the best for the future.

Sixth class we bid you farewell and hope to hear great things about you in the future years to come!

 

CLASS OF THE MONTH

 

Congratulations to Third Class who won class of the month for May.  Their pizza party took place last Friday and was enjoyed by all!   June winners are Second Class who will have their pizza party before we finish for the Summer.  Both classes have lovely manners and are hard workers.

 

BOOK AMNESTY:

Please return any library books or text books to school before the summer holidays.

 

SAFETY:

Pupils were taught at Assembly on Monday, 27th June about the importance of keeping safe on the roads, on the farm, on their bikes and in the water over the summer holidays. Parents are encouraged to remind their children about these important messages throughout the summer.

RACKARD LEAGUE:

Boys reached the hurling quarter finals before losing to Kilmuckridge on Friday, 27th May while the girls also got as far as the camogie semi final before losing to Kilrush on Monday, 13th June. Many thanks to Miss Hearne!

Congratulations to Piercestown girls who won the County Rounders Final on Thursday, 23rd June when they beat Raheen 36-20 in a thrilling match in Taghmon. Well Done girls and Miss Whelan! Boys reached the quarter final in the rounders competition before going out to Taghmon.

 

DMP:

Sixty two pupils from Third to Sixth Class made their way to DMP Athletic Grounds on Wednesday, June 15th for an Inter-Schools Competition. They took part in 100m, 800m, 1000m, Relays, Long Jump, High Jump, Javelin Throwing and Shot Putt. Eight schools in all participated and, much to our delight, we scored 100 points and won the trophy for Best School.

SPORTS NEWS

 

Active Week was a great success. All pupils joined in enthusiastically in activities such as Hula Hoop Challenge, Welly Throwing, Skipathon, Wake Up and Shake Up, Walk a Mile with a Smile, WOW walk, Athetics Coaching, Hurling Coaching and a Soccer League. The week finished off with a brilliant Sports day. Many Thanks to Miss Hearne, Miss Taylor, Ms. Áine Whelan and the Active Committee for organising the week.  Thanks to Mrs. Dolores Byrne for organising a brilliant sports day!  It was great to see Sarah O’ Connor back in school with the Leinster Camogie Cup!  Congratulations!  Thanks to members of the St. Martins club who spent Wednesday coaching the children.  Thanks also to our Parents Committee, to Londis for their support and to HB Ice Cream, allowing us to raise €195.70 for Down Syndrome Ireland.

 

SPELLING BEE

 

Congratulations to Harry Dempsey, 6th class, who made it to the final of the Eason’s Spelling Bee Competition in the Bord Gais Theatre on Monday, 20th June. Harry had won the Leinster title on the previous Monday in Dublin. Harry is an excellent speller and did us proud on the day. Fifteen classmates travelled to support him and the whole school tuned into Today FM to hear the final. Harry has earned the school three thousand euro worth of books from Eason’s for our class libraries. He also won a nice prize for himself. Well Done and Thank You, Harry!

Eason’s Spelling Bee

Congratulations to Harry Dempsey in 6th class on becoming the Leinster Champion of the Eason’s Spellng Bee. The competition took place in Eason’s O’Connell St. yesterday. Well done Harry. Very best of luck in the All Ireland Final next Monday, June 20th in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin City Centre. Tune in to live broadcast of final at10 a.m. on Monday 20th on Today FM.

Active Week

The Active Committee are very busy preparing for Active Week which kicks off on Tuesday June 7th with Walk A Mile With A Smile around the school grounds at 10.30. Tuesday is also Jersey Day so wear your favourite one to school that day. Sun cream, drinks and suitable clothing are advised every day for Active Week.

WOW. Funky Feet Day .Walk On Wednesday, June 8th. All pupils are asked to assemble at St Martin’s Centre from  9 am and we will walk to school at 9 20 am. For fun the children can wear odd socks and shoes with funky laces – use your imaginations!!

Thursday, June 9th starts with WAKE UP and SHAKE UP from 9 am on in the playground behind the school. All welcome to join in.

Friday June 10th is SPORT’S DAY. Fun and activities all day. At 2 pm we will raise the GREEN FLAG. To  finish off Sport’s Day, there will be a ROUNDER’S match between 6th class and their parents. Not to be missed! Please join us at any stage during Sport’s Day or for any of the activities during the week.

 

Community Games Athletics

Our Community Games Local Area Athletics Competition will be held in the DMP Grounds Sinnottstown Lane, Drinagh on Thursday 19th May.Registration: 6pm. Start: 6 30 pm sharp.3 euro per child. There are at least 2 events for each age group. Events for U8 up to U16  Boys and Girls plus a FUN RUN for U6. For full list of Athletic events, see http://www.communitygames.ie/events.html. School closure

A new Primary Language curriculum is being introduced to all Primary Schools in September 2016. Principals and a member of the teaching staff have already attended a training course and there will be one full day of staff training in our school on Friday 27th May, the day after the Confirmation. Therefore, the school will be closed on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th May. There will be another staff training day held in the Education Centre in September, we are awaiting confirmation of the date. We are currently working on the 2016-2017 school calendar and will circulate it when it is finalized.

Art Exhibition

A word of thanks to all who attended the opening night of our Annual Art Exhibition last night. We had great fun admiring all the lovely artwork. Many thanks also to Helen Gaynor who officially opened the exhibition and spoke so nicely to the children. The photographs below are just a small selection of the artwork on display. The exhibition will continue until Friday 29th April so please call in anytime during school hours and have a look – it’s well worth a visit!
