April 2015

A few updates from the Parents’ Association:

keep your kids safe online

Cyber bullying Talk for Parents

A questionnaire was sent out on Internet Safety Day February 10th to all parents in the school.

Many thanks to those who returned the questionnaire. The results have been analysed and there was an overwhelming response for a request for an information evening for parents.

As a result of this,  Carmel Walsh has been booked for an Information Evening on Internet Safety and how to protect your children on Thursday May 20th at 7pm.

We hope that you can join us in ensuring our children use the wonderful tool that is the internet in the safest way possible!!

Lenrec Clothing Collection May 25th

The Parents’ Association of Piercestown N.S. have  organised for a collection of clothing at the school to raise funds!

recycle clothes

Over the next few weeks, we would really appreciate if you would clean out any unwanted clothes and fill as many bags as possible. For every 10kg bag of recyclable clothing the school will receive €5.50

Clothes may be in any condition condition but must be washed and clean.

Accepted items are as follows: new and used women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, shoes, belts, handbags, ties, linens, household textiles, stuffed toys.

Mobile phones are also accepted in a separate bag.

Pillows and duvets cannot be accepted.

The date of our collection is May 25th so you have a few weeks to get that Spring/Summer clean out in order.

People can drop the bags to the Scout Hall (across the road from the school) before 9.30am on the morning of the 25th of May OR at the Scout Hall up on the veranda on Sunday 24th between 10am and 1pm.

Your support with this project is much appreciated as it costs nothing and the more bags that are filled the greater the amount of money fundraised. All of the money fundraised goes towards further enhancing the high quality education at Piercestown N.S.

An Introduction/Welcome Night to the Parents’ Association along with the AGM will be held on Tuesday 7th October at 7.30pm in the school hall. If you haven’t joined us before or are new to the school, please feel free to come along. We hope to give parents a flavour of our involvement in the school. Ms. Laura Walsh will also be there on the  night to meet and greet parents as she tries to get to know everyone over the coming weeks.

Lenrec Recycling

Our first Clothing Collection with Lenrec Ltd.  of the year will take place in the Community Centre on Monday October 13th. This is of great benefit as it only does it encourage us to clean out and make space in our wardrobes but it also raises funds for the school that go towards useful resources and activities throughout the year and so enhancing the learning experience of all our children at Piercestown N.S. So get clearing out those wardrobes!!!!

Date for your Diary: Christmas Bazaar

Dare we mention the ‘C’ word….the Christmas Bazaar will take place on Sunday December 7th 2014.

Presentations to Mr. Barrett

Last Sport’s Day was a memorable event for many reasons. Not only was there a full day of fun and activities, but it also saw the Parents’ Association present Mr. Barrett with some tokens of appreciation on behalf of all the children and families at Piercestown N.S.

37 years of service is undoubtedly a record that should be acknowledged, appreciated and celebrated. To recognise his magnificent contribution to the education at Piercestown N.S. Mr. Barrett was presented with the following gifts:

  • 2 prints by local photographer Padraig Grant – that had been much admired through the window by Mr. Barrett as he ambled down Rowe Street from time to time.
  • A voucher for the Opera House to use at his leisure during his retirement
  • A lovely wooden sculpture on the theme of ’rounders’ made by Amy Fitzpatrick in 6th class of 2013 2014
  • A scrapbook compiled by all the children in the school from Junior infants to 6th with photos, anecdotes and memories
  • 6th class 2013 2014 also presented Mr. Barrett with a special edition of the St. Martin’s GAA jersey with Mr. Barrett and 37 written on the back

We hope that Mr. Barrett gets great enjoyment from all of the above gifts.

Watch this space for more information and updates. Don’t forget to pop along on Tuesday 7th October if you are free. We look forward to seeing you there.

March 2014:
You are invited to a Coffee Morning in the Guide and Scout Hall on Thursday, 10th April between 9.30 am and 12 noon. All parents, grandparents, friends and teachers are welcome to stop by for a cup of coffee, some homemade baking and a chance to catch up with each other before the Easter Holidays. This will be run by the Parents’ Committee.

We will announce the winner of the Easter Egg Raffle at the Coffee morning. Your children may buy tickets in school between 9.20 – 9.30 on the Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday running up to the Coffee morning. Tickets are €1 each.

We would like to take this opportunity to point out that the recent Voluntary Contribution letter was sent out to ALL parents. The purpose was to say a sincere thanks to all who had contributed and to give a gentle reminder to those who may have forgotten. This is a very important and necessary way of raising funds which go towards our classroom assistant, putting on the Sports Day and providing any extra supplies your children may need during the year.

The next CLOTHING RECYCLING date is Tuesday, 13th May. As usual, you may drop your bags at the Guide & Scout Hall on Monday evening (12th) and also the morning of the 13th. The lorry usually arrives at 10/10.30 am to collect. Items accepted include:

  • new and used men’s/women’s/children’s clean unwanted clothing
  • shoes, belts and handbags
  • ties and linens
  • household textiles and stuffed toys
  • mobile phones to be placed in a separate bag

No Duvets or plastic toys please!
Please look up lenrec.ie for more information on the company involved and to see where the donated items are going. If you have any questions or concerns please talk to any Committee member at any time.
Kind Regards,
Emma Jeffares
